You all know the Easter Bunny
The Easter Bunny is a delightful folkloric character associated with Easter. Often depicted as a rabbit (sometimes even wearing clothes), the Easter Bunny carries colorful eggs.
Originating from German Lutheran traditions, this magical bunny used to play the role of a judge, assessing children’s behavior as the Eastertide season began—much like Santa Claus’s “naughty or nice” list. According to legend, the Easter Bunny visits children’s homes, leaving behind Easter eggs.
Traditionally, real decorated chicken eggs were used, but these gave way to chocolate eggs over time. Nowadays, colorful paper eggs filled with candy and sometimes toys have become the popular choice. The Easter Bunny’s magical deliveries add sweetness and joy to this festive time, echoing the ancient fertility, spring, and renewal traditions.
But what do witches have to do with Easter?
In Swedish folklore, the Easter witches (known as påskkärring or påskhäxa in Swedish and trulli in Finnish) are a fascinating part of Easter traditions.
On the Thursday before Easter (also known as Maundy Thursday or, in Sweden, skärtorsdagen), these mischievous witches take to the skies on their trusty broomsticks.
Their destination? The mythical island of Blåkulla, a place shrouded in mystery and magic.
Their goal? To join the festivities on Blåkulla with the devil and other witches.
In modern times, children dress up as witches, old ladies, or even old men and go door to door on Maundy Thursday. Instead of tricks, they offer handmade cards and greetings, hoping for treats in return. It’s like Halloween in the Nordics!
