National Days in the Nordics

Some Nordic culture and history lessons with the help of ChatGPT and Wikipedia.

While some national days celebrate the independence from another Nordic country, we’re happy to bring all the Nordics back together under friendlier terms.

Norway: May 17th – Constitution Day (Grunnlovsdagen aka Syttende Mai) – This day celebrates Norway’s signing of its constitution in 1814, which paved the way for Norwegian independence from Sweden. It’s a day for children’s parades, with schoolchildren dressed in traditional Norwegian clothing and waving flags. There are also speeches, musical performances, and other celebrations throughout the day as Norwegians reflect on their country’s history and democratic values.

Denmark: June 5th – Constitution Day (Grundlovsdag) – This day marks the signing of Denmark’s constitution in 1849 and the current constitution of 1953. Denmark is one of only a handful of countries that doesn’t have an official national day, but Constitution Day is sometimes considered the equivalent of such a day. It’s a day to celebrate Denmark’s democratic values and to reflect on the country’s long history of democracy.

Sweden: June 6th – National Day (Sveriges nationaldag) – This day commemorates the election of Gustav Vasa as king of Sweden in 1523 and The 1809 Instrument of Government and is celebrated with flag-waving, parades, and other festivities. The celebration often includes cultural performances and speeches by political leaders.

Iceland: June 17th – Independence Day (Þjóðhátíðardagurinn) – This day marks Iceland’s declaration of independence from Denmark in 1944. It’s celebrated with parades, concerts, and other festivities, with many Icelanders donning traditional Icelandic costumes and waving flags.

Finland: December 6th – Independence Day (Itsensäisyyspäivä) commemorates Finland’s declaration of independence from Russia in 1917. It’s a day for solemn reflection and remembrance, with many Finns lighting candles in memory of fallen soldiers or laying wreaths at memorials. There are often formal events and parties in the evening, with Finns dressing up in their finest outfits to celebrate their country’s independence.
