The history of Fat Tuesday, aka Mardi Gras
To celebrate our Nordic roots, the theme of the eve is Phat Friday. It’s like Fat Tuesday, but phatter.
In New Orleans, Mardi Gras is synonymous with parades, costumes, masks, and multi-colored strings of beads. It has also become infamous for “wearing less clothing than considered decent in other contexts.”
While one would think that’s a new phenomenon, it has been documented since 1889, when the Times-Democrat decried the “degree of immodesty exhibited by nearly all female masqueraders seen on the streets.”
We’ll keep the beads and skip the indecencies.
In the Nordics, our celebrations focus on eating. We’ll serve Semlas at the event!
In Denmark and Norway, the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday is called Fetetirsdag (“Fat Tuesday”); the prior weekend is known as Fastelavn and is marked by eating fastelavnsboller.
In Sweden, the day is called Fettisdagen (Fat Tuesday) and is celebrated by eating a sweet roll called fastlagsbulle or Semla.
In Finland, the day is called laskiainen and is celebrated by eating green pea soup and a pastry called laskiaispulla (same as the Swedish Semla).
In Iceland, the day is known as Sprengidagur (Bursting Day) and is marked by eating salted meat and peas.
